Statement of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on the 55th Anniversary of Korean War Armistice

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) issued the following statement on the 55th anniversary of the signing of the Korean War Armistice.

"Today marks the 55th anniversary of the signing of the Korean War Armistice and is a day to remember the service and sacrifice of those who fought so bravely on the Korean Peninsula over a half century ago. The men and women who served in what is sometimes called the Forgotten War deserve our full recognition and respect. They should never be forgotten heroes. That is why I have introduced legislation to honor Korean War veterans and commemorate this anniversary by encouraging Americans to display the flag prominently every July 27th. I will continue to work to ensure that these veterans and the memories of those who never returned from the Korean Peninsula receive the veneration they so richly deserve."

Senators Clinton and Thad Cochran (R-MS) have introduced the Korean War Veterans Recognition Act to honor Korean War veterans and encourage Americans to display the flag on Korean War Armistice Day, which is observed annually on July 27. Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY) has introduced a companion bill in the House of Representatives.

Korean War Armistice Day recognizes that negotiators signed an armistice agreement at Panmunjom on July 27, 1953. The signing of the armistice led to North Korea's withdrawal across the 38th parallel, and allowed the Republic of Korea to be free from attempts to force Communism upon its people.

Senator Clinton is also an original co-sponsor of legislation to grant a Federal Charter to the Korean War Veterans Association. That legislation was signed into law on June 30.
