Letter to Meredith Broadbent, Chairman of the International Trade Commission - Light Truck Tires from China

Letter

The Honorable Meredith M. Broadbent

Chairman

U.S. International Trade Commission

500 E Street, S.W.

Washington, D.C. 20436

Dear Chairman Broadbent,

I am writing to encourage you to uphold the recent Department of Commerce ruling that additional duties be levied on unfairly traded imports of passenger vehicle and light truck tires from China.

The quantity of Chinese-made tires flooding our market is alarming. Since the expiration of a Section 421 petition, which provided relief to domestic producers and workers of passenger vehicle and light truck tires, we have seen an unprecedented increase in the number of imports of similar products from China. The impact on Indiana's tire industry has, and likely will continue to result in the loss of quality jobs, absent the imposition of antidumping and countervailing duties by the Commission.

Hoosier workers do not ask for hand-outs or any special treatment. The products they make, however, cannot fairly compete when others refuse to play by the agreed-upon rules. When we hold foreign companies and countries that cut corners accountable, we protect jobs and fuel economic growth, benefitting consumers who want quality products.

As the Commission and the Department of Commerce have previously found, the injury in this case is clear and substantial. As such, I respectfully ask the Commission to assess duties against the specified passenger vehicle and light truck tire imports that cause injury to my constituents.

Sincerely,

U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly
