Benishek Backs Student Success Act

Press Release

Date: July 9, 2015
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: K-12 Education

Yesterday evening, Dr. Benishek voted in favor of H.R. 5, the "Student Success Act," legislation that would make a number of improvements to our nation's education system. Federal government involvement in education is at an all-time high, yet many students are failing to graduate. In addition, an alarming number of graduates lack the basic skills necessary to succeed in college or the workforce.

"Parents, teachers and local school boards know better than Washington bureaucrats when it comes to their kids' educational need," said Dr. Benishek. "I voted in favor of this bill because it increases parental choice and oversight, while empowering state governments to set education standards that meet the needs of Michigan students."

H.R. 5 eliminates 65 duplicative and ineffective programs and replaces them with a Local Academic Flexibility Grant that will allow school districts to custom tailor a program to their students' needs. Additionally, the bill empowers states to measure school performance based on the unique needs of the local community, and also provides more opportunities for parents to have a direct impact on the content of their child's education.

The "Student Success Act" passed the House and will now head to the United States Senate for further consideration.
