Jordan Statement on Marriage Oral Arguments Before Supreme Court

Statement

Date: April 28, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) made the following comments regarding today's oral arguments in Obergefell v. Hodges, Ohio's federal lawsuit on state marriage policy before the Supreme Court:

"Marriage should be defined as it has always been. This is the ideal for raising children and is good for society. But while Americans are deeply divided on this issue, we should be able to agree that a Supreme Court decision would only exacerbate that division. Like the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, a Supreme Court ruling that overturns state laws on marriage would do nothing to end the debate about marriage, but would instead prolong it.

"In state after state, activist judges have overruled the will of the people and forcibly redefined marriage according to their opinion, not something written in the Constitution. The Supreme Court should step in and defend the right of Americans to decide this important issue themselves."
