Gov. Heineman Orders Flags to Half-Staff on Sunday, May 15 in Observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day

(Lincoln, Neb.) Gov. Dave Heineman today reminded government agencies, businesses and private citizens that all U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff Sunday, May 15 in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Gov. Heineman said, "Peace Officers Memorial Day is a day to remember the brave men and women of law enforcement who have fallen in the line of duty and those who carry on the legacy of bravery and service in their duties today."

In 1994, a federal law was enacted requiring the American flag to be lowered to half-staff every May 15 as a special tribute to the more than 15,000 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

In Nebraska, 128 officers have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1866. Those who have made the ultimate sacrifice include federal, state, county, municipal and tribal agency officers, as well as railroad, game and parks, and correctional officers.

Lt. Governor Rick Sheehy will speak at public ceremony honoring fallen officers at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Academy in Grand Island.
