Today, Representative Tim Walz released the following statement on H.J. Res. 35.

"While we face threats from terrorists across the globe, Tea Party Republicans want to shut down the Department of Homeland Security to play politics with immigration. That isn't right, and it's not how government is supposed to work. I think my Republican colleague from New York, Rep. Peter King, said it best, "This is like living in a world with crazy people.'

"If the Tea Party Republicans want to address immigration, they should bring up and pass their own comprehensive immigration reform bill and force a real debate about the issue. Unfortunately, they're unwilling to ditch their rigid ideology and come up with pragmatic, long-term solutions to the problems we face.

"Enough is enough. The American people deserve better than this. The American people deserve a government that works; a government founded on compromise and pragmatic populism, not rigid ideology. We all know the solution to this problem, and it's not a three-week CR; it's the long-term, clean, bipartisan bill to fund DHS passed overwhelmingly by the Republican-led Senate. A three-week CR does nothing except create another Tea Party-made crisis at the end of March and I could not support it. My constituents are tired of these partisan political games.

"At his core, the Speaker is a pragmatic man; I call on him to bring forward the clean, bipartisan bill passed by the Republican-led Senate to fund the DHS for the entire year."
