Dr. Benishek Comments Snowmobile Rule Change

Press Release

Date: Jan. 29, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

On Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, the United States Forest Service (USFS) published a final rule for the use of snowmobiles in National Forests. Rep. Dan Benishek (MI-01) released the following statement in response to the rule:

"Snowmobiling is not just a fun winter activity in Northern Michigan, but it is also vital to our local economy and helps keep local businesses going in some of the tougher winter months. This rule puts a lot of responsibility on local forest superintendents. During my snowmobile tour this week, I hope to learn from local constituents about ways we can better communicate the needs of all stakeholders to the Forest Service. I plan on staying engaged on this issue in order to ensure that the needs of my constituents continue to be met."

The recent rule is a result of a 2013 court decision ruling that ordered the USFS to designate the roads, trails, and areas on National Forest Service lands that allow for snowmobile use. Only units of the Forest Service with sufficient snow cover to sustain snowmobile traffic are impacted by the rule, and many of those have already designated as allowed for use.

Moving forward, according to the released rule, areas that have already been designated for use do not have to reconsider their status. However, those areas that have not completed designations will be expected to complete their plans for snowmobile use in a timely manner, as well as to publish physical and virtual maps available for public use.

"I'm looking forward to getting out on a sled and talking with folks about this issue tomorrow and Friday. I want to hear what they have to say, and I want to ensure that local voices continue to be heard by the Forest Service, as this issue is so important to our local economy."
