Pelosi Statement on the 67th Anniversary of Israel's Independence Day

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today to mark the 67th anniversary of Israel's Independence Day, which starts at sundown this evening:

"Each Israeli Independence Day is a fresh testimony to the strength, the creativity and the courage of the Israeli people -- and to a nation that has made deserts bloom and cities thrive. For 67 years, Israel has stood as a global beacon of perseverance and success. In the face of near-constant threats to its very existence, staring down enemies dedicated to its destruction, Israel has risen to become one of the most dynamic and innovative nations on the face of the earth.

"As we celebrate the birth and honor the growth of the nation of Israel, we reaffirm the unbreakable bonds of friendship that connect Israel and the United States. The American people cherish this relationship -- rooted in shared values, common ideals and mutual interests. Our commitment to Israel's security is total and unshakable. Together, we will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Israel against her enemies.

"Today, Israel stands as one of the greatest political achievements of the 20th century. We pray for the day when Israel's people can live free from fear and when the dream of peace becomes a reality."
