Hultgren Supports Passage of Legislation Forcing EPA to Reveal the Science behind Regulations

U.S. Representative Randy Hultgren (IL-14) today supported House passage of H.R. 1030, the Secret Science Reform Act, a bill he originally cosponsored which prohibits the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator from creating new regulations unless all scientific and technical information relied upon is made sufficiently available for analysis. EPA has failed to release the science behind numerous EPA regulations to both outside researchers and Congress.

"Transparency and reproducibility are basic tenets of sound science, but EPA has instead repeatedly chosen to bypass Congress and remain tight-lipped about the science they rely on to place new regulations on Americans," said Rep. Hultgren. "Whenever the administration hands down more regulations, American taxpayers have a right to see the data and determine if those rules are based on sound science. Protecting the environment is an important priority, which is why any regulations passed down should have the science to back them up. H.R. 1030 ensures this transparency, while maintaining necessary confidentiality of healthcare information and applicable federal privacy standards."
