Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today issued the following statement after the House of Representatives delegation to the Dominican Republic held meetings yesterday with the President of the Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrés Navarro; President of the Chambers of Deputies, Abel Martínez; and other government officials.

"At the U.S. Embassy Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, our delegation received a comprehensive briefing from U.S. Ambassador James "Wally' Brewster and the Embassy country team. We are grateful to the distinguished service of Ambassador Brewster, his team and the U.S. Marines serving at the Embassy.

"The delegation then met with Dominican Republic Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrés Navarro and Vice Minister, Alejandra Liriano. During the meeting, we discussed the issue of Haitian immigration and citizenship for Dominicans of Haitian descent -- matters of strong interest to the Members of our delegation. The Foreign Minister described steps the Dominican Republic is taking to address this challenge. We also discussed trade, counter narcotics cooperation, climate change and other matters of mutual importance.

"Our delegation then proceeded to a meeting with the President of the Chamber of Deputies Abel Martínez and senior Deputies. During the meeting, we discussed a range of issues, including Haitian immigration; agriculture and trade-related topics; alternative energy sources; and bilateral and regional relations.

"Next, we were honored to be welcomed by President Danilo Medina to the Presidential Palace. There, the President and the delegation continued discussions on Haitian immigration and Dominican citizenship for individuals of Haitian descent. In addition, we engaged in a productive dialogue on investing in education and promoting economic growth in both countries, among other issues.

"Later in the day, we also met with diplomats; scholars; and civic, business and sports figures, including David "Big Papi' Ortiz."
