Rep. Linda Sánchez: AUMF Gives us Flexibility to Debate Actions Against ISIL

Rep. Linda Sánchez (CA-38) issued the following statement today after President Obama asked Congress for a three year reauthorization to continue a targeted military campaign against the terrorist group ISIL:

"ISIL's recent atrocities prove that their depravity knows no bounds. Their attacks against innocent civilians and continued threats against the U.S. pose a significant threat to our national security that cannot go unchecked," said Rep. Sánchez.

"American power works best when we are united together in opposition to evil and this is why I commend President Obama for asking Congress to pass a bipartisan authorization for the use of military force (AUMF) that is narrowly tailored to the circumstances of this conflict.

I am further encouraged by the President's desire to repeal the 2002 AUMF and include sunset provisions to ensure that Congress is fully consulted before the U.S. enters any conflict that could endanger the lives of our troops.

I look forward to debating how we can give our military leaders the flexibility they need to train other troops and defend the assets we have in the region."
