Lujan Grisham Statement in Response to State of the Union

Statement

Today, U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01), a member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement in response to President Obama's State of the Union address.

"Our top priority -- nationally and in New Mexico -- must be the economic security of American families. The President made a compelling case for the resurgence of the U.S. economy and committed to the continuation of middle class economics. This economic agenda invests in states like New Mexico who are still recovering.

"The President's proposals would boost the economic security of New Mexico families by increasing wages, guaranteeing paid leave for all employees and providing free access to community colleges.

"I agree that we need to treat childcare as an economic priority that will boost the middle class. That is especially true in New Mexico, where families face incredible odds to succeed.

"My guest at tonight's address, U.S. Army veteran Andres Lazo, is working to secure his own economic security -- he is a small business owner and is actively engaged in Albuquerque's entrepreneurial community. He has the vision and skills that we need to jump-start New Mexico's economy.

"I appreciate the President's focus on helping veterans find work when they return from the battlefield. And while we've made investments in reforming the VA and reducing the backlog, until we have real accountability in the VA health care system and every veteran gets the healthcare they deserve, the job is not done.

"Finally, I am apprehensive about the state of foreign affairs. As we saw in Paris, the threat of terror is still real, and we must continue to strengthen our alliances to minimize that threat. We also must remain vigilant about ensuring our military is used as a last resort. One way to do that is to increase our investment in the science and technology being developed at our national laboratories, which advances our national security interests and creates jobs locally."
