U.S. Senator David Vitter (R-La.) today voted in favor of the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans (SAV) Act. It passed the U.S. Senate 99-0, and also unanimously passed the U.S. House of Representatives on January 12, 2015.

"We can't turn back time for the families affected by these tragedies, but we can work to prevent them in the future," Vitter said. "We owe it to our veterans to provide them with the support they need as they return home and as they transition back to civilian life."

The Clay Hunt SAV Act increases mental health resources at Veterans Administration clinics by making improvements such as recruiting additional psychiatrists and creating a peer support community for veterans. It also increases VA accountability by requiring an audit of mental health and suicide prevention programs.
