Vitter: More Evidence Washington's Obamacare Exemption is Illegal

Statement

U.S. Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) today made the following statement after the District of Columbia government indicated that Congress should not obtain insurance through D.C.'s Small Business Exchange. Vitter has long made the argument that Congress has only been allowed to keep their taxpayer funded subsidy for Obamacare because they are getting their health insurance on the Small Business Exchange. Vitter has labeled this Washington's Obamacare Exemption and argues that Congress is not a small business, and therefore it would be illegal for them to receive the subsidy.

The court filing this week declares that the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) overruled D.C. government when it issued regulations allowing the government to continue making employer contributions to the health plans of congressional members and staff. Vitter is the Chairman of the Senate Small Business & Entrepreneurship Committee, which has jurisdiction over federal issues affecting America's small businesses.

"Nobody considers Congress a small business, which is why I've said for months that the Washington special exemption is unlawful and just plain unfair," said Vitter. "I'll continue to fight against the egregious misuse of the small business exemption so that all Washington insiders -- including President Obama and each and every Member of Congress -- are forced to live under Obamacare just like the rest of America without a special taxpayer funded subsidy."
