Congressman Coffman Statement on the Save American Workers Act

Congressman Mike Coffman released the following statement on his vote in support of H.R. 30, the Save American Workers Act, which seeks to limit the economic harm of Obamacare by repealing the 30-hour week full-time definition and replacing it with a 40-hour full-time definition.

Under the employer mandate in Obamacare, companies are required to provide health insurance, or pay a penalty, if they have more than 50 full-time employees. With a 30-hour work week, employers are incentivized to cut employees' hours to below 30 hours in order to avoid the fines from the employer mandate.

The Obama administration delayed the employer mandate until 2015 and this legislation seeks to protect workers from one of its more harmful impacts.

Research has found that 2.6 million Americans could be at risk of having their hours cut with the 30-hour rule and wages slashed by up to 25 percent.

"The Obama administration delayed this damaging policy until after the election," said Congressman Mike Coffman. "If it needed to be delayed past the election that was a sign it was bad policy, and my vote today was to protect American workers from having their hours cut and wages slashed."
