John Kerry on Harmful Changes to "Roadless Rule"

Administration's changes pave the way for logging in National Forests

Below is a statement from Senator John Kerry on the Bush administration's actions today to open up nearly a third of all remote national forest lands to road building, logging and other commercial ventures:

"The Bush administration's drive to open up our rare wild forests to logging is the latest attempt to sell off America's natural resources to the highest bidder. They're abandoning government's responsibility to preserve fish and wildlife habitat for sportsmen and clean drinking water for millions of Americans.

"The roadless protections this administration is destroying were finalized after years of scientific study, 600 public hearings and a record number of public comments, but this administration is instead catering to a narrow and powerful interest."
