Putnam: Iraqi Elections Prove Democracy Can Work in
the Middle East

WASHINGTON - Yesterday's historic elections in Iraq have proven that democracy can work in the Middle East, according to Congressman Adam H. Putnam (FL-12).

"For the first time in over fifty years, millions of Iraqis went to the polls and voted in their first free election," said Putnam. "I praise the courage of the Iraqi people, undaunted by the threats of terrorists and suicide-bombers, proving to the world that they are serious about peace, prosperity, and liberty at home."

"In spite of threats to their lives, Iraqi men and women voted for democracy and for their future," said Putnam. "Although we continue to move in the right direction, the road to democracy will continue to be rocky and marred by violence, and the process will be imperfect."

"We must recognize the courage of the Iraqi people, as well as the efforts by the Iraqi security forces and our own troops to keep the elections as safe as possible," said Putnam. "While these elections represent a victory for democracy, it is crucial to remember that this election is but one of the first steps toward establishing a democratic government in Iraq."

Putnam traveled to Baghdad during a visit to the Middle East last year. During his trip, he met with Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, President Ghazi al-Yawer, former outgoing civilian administrator Paul Bremer, former commander Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez and others Iraqi leaders.

"I continue salute our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines for their courage, bravery and service to our nation," Putnam stated. "They continue to sacrifice their lives on behalf of freedom and have done our nation proud. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of them and their families."
