Press Release

Date: Sept. 30, 2014
Location: Newburgh, NY

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) announced a major investment to bring additional manufacturing jobs to Newburgh through The Solar Energy Consortium (TSEC). This Economic Development Administration (EDA) investment of $650,000 will make infrastructure improvements as well as job training for advanced manufacturing.

"My top priority has been to expand our local manufacturers and create hundreds of 21st century clean energy jobs - especially in cities like Newburgh," said Rep. Maloney. "By supporting our manufacturers and innovative partnerships, we can invest in job training, create good-paying jobs right here in the Hudson Valley, and grow our economy," said Rep. Maloney.

"TSEC is gratified by this additional investment by the EDA which will enable us to continue to work with our partners to revitalize the city's economy by repurposing vacant commercial space and creating good paying manufacturing jobs," said Carl Meyer, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Solar Energy Consortium.

Funding from this EDA investment will enable the continuation and enhancement of the City of Newburgh's "A River of Opportunities" program. This program is a multi-stakeholder initiative whose objective is to fill the city's vacant commercial space with new or expanding manufacturing companies, thus creating good paying jobs with benefits. Importantly, this program will also provide training to prepare unemployed residents for initial employment in the manufacturing sector. The marketing program targets entrepreneurs, manufacturers looking to expand and garment manufacturers seeking available space to re-shore their production operations. TSEC, through its CGAM SMARTT Lab concept, will provide technical and business advice to the targeted manufacturing companies to help them re-locate their manufacturing facilities and improve their manufacturing processes, thus enabling them to grow and add jobs. A key objective is the fit-up of the Newburgh Armory Machinist Training/Education Center, including the purchase of specialized manufacturing equipment for use by prospective new tenants of the city's available commercial space. The total cost of this investment is $1,380,000.

The EDA's Economic Development Assistance Program (EDAP) makes construction, non-construction, and revolving loan fund investments to leverage regional assets to support the implementation of regional economic development strategies designed to create jobs, leverage private capital and encourage economic development.
