Cassidy, Fleming Urge Landrieu to Push Back on Obama Administration Ozone Regulations

Press Release

Date: Oct. 6, 2014
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Environment

Today, Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Rep. John Fleming (R-LA) are urging Senator Mary Landrieu, Chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, to push back on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for ozone. If lowered, these standards will cause harm to Louisiana, particularly its energy and manufacturing sectors.

Senator Landrieu supported President Obama's nominees who put these harmful regulations in place, like EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. Representatives Cassidy and Fleming are calling on Senator Landrieu to join the delegation's efforts in preventing a train wreck from occurring by drafting a letter voicing Louisiana's concerns, hopefully with democrat colleagues signing on to this bipartisan effort.

"Lower ozone standards will have serious consequences on Louisiana's economy. Louisianans across the state are concerned about the impact these ozone rules are going to have on their businesses, their jobs and their workers," said Dr. Bill Cassidy. "Senator Landrieu's voting history shows she is unlikely to vote against President Obama's nominees who put these regulations in place. She has failed to secure a vote in the Senate on any House-passed legislation that would put a check on the EPA. At a minimum, we hope she joins us in standing up to the Obama Administration's ozone regulations before Louisiana jobs are put in jeopardy."

Recently, Dr. Cassidy joined Senator David Vitter at three Senate Environmental and Public Works (EPW) committee field briefings in Louisiana. The briefings focused on the potential impacts of proposed EPA ozone regulations. Specifically discussed in New Orleans was EPA's proposed "Waters of the United States Rule" and how it could harm Louisiana families, farmers and infrastructure projects.
