Kuster Statement on Tea Party Candidate Marilinda Garcia's Victory in the Republican Primary

This evening, Congresswoman Annie Kuster released the following statement on Tea Party candidate Marilinda Garcia's victory in the Republican primary contest for the Second Congressional District:

"Tonight, Granite State voters have been given a clear choice. My opponent is a Tea Party candidate who supports extreme policies that would hurt working middle class families - from opposing the Violence Against Women Act and a woman's right to choose, to supporting harmful education cuts that would hurt our children, to voting to slash Social Security benefits for our seniors - she is clearly not looking out for the best interests of Granite State families."

"From day one in office, I've fought for the issues that matter most to us, like creating more jobs and opportunity for our middle class families, making college more affordable for Granite State students, standing up for our veterans, and protecting the benefits our seniors have earned and deserve. We must stand together to continue moving our state forward - and we must work together to stop extremists like my opponent from inflicting her radical Tea Party agenda on the Granite State and hurting our hardworking families."

Background

On Women's Issues: Garcia opposes the Violence Against Women Act, opposes a woman's right to choose, and opposes the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would help eliminate pay discrimination based on gender.

On Education: While in the state legislature Garcia voted for steep cuts to education funding in the Bill O'Brien budget that would hurt Granite State children.

On Social Security: Garcia openly supports measures that would lead to cuts in Social Security, including raising the retirement age and limiting benefits, and she voted in favor of "privatizing all aspects of Social Security."
