"The first time we had a meeting with Congressman Coffman, he actually reached out to us. He came and knocked on our door," said Papa Dia, President of the African Leadership Group. "To be honest with you, I was surprised. He did not wait for us to call. He reached out to us and asked how he could help and we want to work with people who add value to our community."

With less than 30 days until Election Day, Congressman Mike Coffman is campaigning across CD 6. Today, Coffman met with leaders of the African immigrant community to discuss progress at Afrikmall, the city's first African-centric mall and community center located on East Colfax Avenue in Aurora.

"I grew up around here a long time ago, this area has fallen under hard times," said Coffman. "The great thing about the immigrant communities is how they are revitalizing places like this -- places where I grew up."

Coffman has worked closely with leaders in the African immigrant community to connect AfrikMall with nonprofit and local government officials who can benefit the project. From community health clinics like the Metro Community Provider Network to Aurra Mental Health, Coffman has worked to help AfrikMall bring in services for the community that are linguistically and culturally appropriate.

"Afrikmall is so important as a cultural center for the community," continued Coffman. "It's important for our immigrant communities to maintain their cultural identity. When they do they will maintain strong families and strong families are a foundation for a strong America. That's why it's important to me that the Afrikmall be successful."

"We were excited when you spoke to our group about keeping our culture for our kids. We need to hear that from our congressman. That really went to our hearts," said African Womens' Empowerment Group President Aminata Keita, referencing Coffman's visit to her home on September 26 where he spoke to the African Women's Empowerment Group.
