MacArthur Statement on President Obama's Failure to Address Crisis at Southern Border

Press Release

Date: Sept. 8, 2014
Location: Bayville, NJ

Republican Tom MacArthur released the following statement today after President Barack Obama admitted yesterday on Meet the Press that partisan politics is driving his decision to ignore the growing illegal immigration crisis until after the November elections in hopes of electing more Democrats, like Aimee Belgard, to the House and Senate.

"President Obama's failed policies and the refusal to act by both Parties in Congress have fueled a rapidly growing illegal immigration crisis on our southern border. The President's politically-motivated rhetoric and actions leading up to and following his 2012 re-election have resulted in thousands of undocumented children being abandoned on our border in the past few months, only adding to the chaos in border states," said MacArthur. "I have made my position on illegal immigration clear for months. I believe that any attempt to address immigration must begin with strong and secure borders and that any illegal immigrant who has committed a crime must be immediately returned to their country of origin. I oppose amnesty and in-state tuition for those here illegally, and believe that illegal immigrants in this country today should be required to pay back taxes, learn English and get in line behind those who have observed the law as part of any tough, but fair path to citizenship. As is the case for almost every issue of consequence facing the country today, my opponent, Aimee Belgard, has refused to state a position on this issue. She seems content to hide behind millions of dollars in special interest attack ads from her friends in Washington, while running a campaign that is stunning for its lack of substance and seriousness. It's time for Freeholder Belgard to come out of hiding and let people know where she stands. Does she agree with the so-called Dream Act here in New Jersey? Will she criticize President Obama for his inaction and failed leadership on the federal level? I look forward to her response."
