Sen. Whitehouse Applauds New Effort to Reduce HFC Emissions

Today the Obama Administration announced a series of new executive actions and private-sector commitments to reduce hydroflourocarbons (HFCs), extremely potent greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change and that are commonly used in air conditioners and refrigerators. U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a leading voice for action on climate change who has repeatedly called for major American corporations to be more vocal about the need to act on climate change, released the statement below regarding the new initiative:

"This is an important step toward reducing harmful pollutants that contribute to climate change," Whitehouse said. "In particular, the commitment by both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo to pursue the wide-scale adoption of HFC-free refrigeration equipment sends an important message: they may compete for business every day in every corner of the globe, but they both agree that climate change is a serious threat that must be addressed. That's the kind of message that can inspire even bigger steps to combat climate change in the future, and I thank the Administration and all of the corporations taking part in this new initiative."
