Issue Position: Restoring Fiscal Discipline

Issue Position

Date: Sept. 17, 2014

Our national debt stands at $17 trillion and it's expected to grow by at least $2 trillion over the next decade if we continue on the same course. We cannot maintain this unsustainable path. We owe it to future generations to get our fiscal house in order. As a fiscal conservative, I support passing a balanced budget amendment--it's the only way to ensure that Washington learns to live within its means. Massachusetts has a balanced budget amendment, as do most other states, and it works just fine.

Many candidates talk about the problem of overspending, but nothing ever gets done. If elected, I intend to introduce a measure to block automatic pay raises for members of Congress until they pass a balanced budget. Believe me, if it impacts them personally, Congress will act quickly to bring spending in line with revenues.
