Reid Statement On Senate Republican Vote Against Amendment to Get Dark Money Out of Politics

Press Release

Date: Sept. 11, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement today after Senate Republicans blocked passage of a constitutional amendment banning dark money in American politics by a vote of 54-42.

"Senate Democrats want a government that works for all Americans -- not just the richest few. Today Senate Republicans clearly showed that they would rather sideline hard-working families in order to protect the Koch brothers and other radical interests that are working to fix our elections and buy our democracy.

"Only in Washington is campaign finance reform a partisan issue. A vast majority of Americans support undoing the damage of the Citizens United decision and enacting common sense campaign finance laws. The American people's involvement in government should not be dependent on a check book.

"Every American deserves a fair shot and an equal voice in our democracy, and the national movement to reform our broken campaign finance system will continue. While Republicans in Congress stand up for the Koch brothers, Senate Democrats will continue to stand up for our constituents and fight the corrosive influence of dark money in American politics."
