Tom Reed Announces Green Light for Arc of Yates to Start Rebuilding

Press Release

Date: Sept. 9, 2014

Following a meeting this week with the Arc of Yates and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Tom Reed says the Arc can now start work on repairs to the Arc's building. Reed's office worked with FEMA to ensure the Arc met the requirements to receive a "critical private non-profit" designation and to get the ball rolling on repairs.

"Getting the green light from FEMA means that the Arc can start what will be a major rebuilding process and get the process underway before winter weather hits," Reed said. "After our visit to the Arc last month and meeting with staff there, it's clear the Arc is doing an incredible job utilizing the resources it has to care for everyone in need of the Arc's services but what they need now is to be able to rebuild. Making sure the Arc has the resources and support it needs to rebuild is something deserving and fair for the entire community."

In addition to securing the critical need status, Reed pushed to have FEMA visit the Arc to make complete damage assessments and meet with Arc employees to outline the application process for rebuilding.

Reed recently visited the Arc of Yates in Penn Yan to view the flooding damage firsthand and announce his bipartisan National Disaster Relief Tax Act to offer tax relief to communities, like Penn Yan, devastated in presidentially-declared natural disasters.

The Arc of Yates was hit particularly hard by flooding in May, causing over one million dollars in damages and forcing staff to utilize offices and conference rooms as makeshift housing spaces while it rebuilds. Reed's bill would provide tax relief to places like the Arc, easing the strain so they can rebuild quicker.

Reed's office continues to be in regular communication with the Arc and the organization's Executive Director to see that the Arc receives the help it needs to fully rebuild and maintain the organization's critical services to the community.
