Rep. Cuellar and Mexican Officials Announce Energy Reform Collaboration between US and Mexico

Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX28), along with Mexican Congressman Hector García García, officials from Texas A&M International University in Laredo, as well as Jesús Ancer Rodriguez, Rector of La Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, met last week in Monterrey, Mexico to discuss energy reform in Mexico and the great advancements in production of oil and natural gas in both the United States and Mexico.

Officials also signed a memorandum of understanding for the collaboration between Texas A&M International University and La Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León to offer dual and joint degree programs, student and faculty exchange programs and collaborate on research. Congressman Cuellar was an honorary participant in the signing ceremony.

"We are at the edge of a new age of energy independence in North America," said Congressman Cuellar. "The advances in energy have the potential to change our communities in a very positive way. With the energy reform in Mexico, Texas companies will find investment and research opportunities. Agreements like the one signed between Texas A&M International University and the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León mean that Texas and Mexico benefit from the joint training of the new energy workforce. I congratulate both universities for setting a strong example of partnership between the United States and Mexico and look forward to seeing many more examples of regional cooperation."

"Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), together with Laredo Community College and the Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M University and in partnership with several Mexican Universities, will establish an International Petroleum Institute in Laredo," said Dr. Ray M. Keck III. This collaborative will bring together engineers, the workforce, and the many social, economic, and civic stakeholders who are part of shale extraction. The Institute will conduct its activities from a platform both bi-national and bilingual. Plans call for the Institute to begin operations in the spring of 2015. "
