Dickerson's Response to the Supreme Court's Decision

Statement

Date: Aug. 18, 2014

The recent decision made by five of the Supreme Court Justices sparked a cord with me. Women all over the world are constantly battling unjust systems for their rights and privileges. Women had to fight for their civil rights to vote as well as for equal rights. We are fighting for pay equity and now for the privilege to manage our health, wellness and family planning. It's obvious from the Court's recent decision that most men just don't get it!

Perhaps if employers who are hiding behind "religious beliefs" paid fair wages women as their male-counterparts they could afford to pay for personal contraception. Furthermore, does the law address in that ruling denial of access for the prescription Viagra in their plan for men? I don't think so.

I am of the opinion that women and their "partners" should have the right to engage in family planning based on their moral beliefs, social, economical and financial circumstances. Women often elect to use contraception methods as a way of family planning for various reasons such as education, medical, physical, economical and/or social advancement. It is intrusive for an employer to impose their religious beliefs as a tool to deny women access to an insurance product that will assist them in family planning. This is just wrong.

A woman's decision to use birth control methods should not be controlled by an employers insurance decision or social conservative political activists for political gain. Women often have to multi-micro manage many tasks; therefore, family planning is imperative when making conceptual decisions. The five Justices who ruled in favor of Hobby Lobby obviously do not understand the rationale of family planning of which is determined and agreeable between a man and a woman prospectively. Thus, the Court's ruling in favor of Hobby Lobby disrespected and disregarded a woman's rights to have access to contraception through their insurance plan.
