Sinema Supports Arizona Startups

Press Release

Date: July 31, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema and Congressman David Valadao of California introduced the Startup Act of 2014. This bipartisan legislation provides immigrant entrepreneurs and foreign graduates of U.S. universities with the opportunity to stay in the U.S. if they are able to create jobs and bolster our economy. Following the bill's introduction, Congresswoman Sinema made this statement:

"With two Fortune 500 companies and a multitude of smaller startups founded by foreign entrepreneurs headquartered in Arizona, it's easy to see the benefits of immigrant innovators in my home state. Freeport-McMoRan and Avnet Inc. are two of the many immigrant founded companies employing thousands of Arizonans today," said Sinema. "The Startup Act will create more high-wage jobs, spur greater private investment, and encourage economic growth for Arizona."

In Arizona, immigrants make up 13.4 percent of the population; own 19.6 percent of businesses, and start 31.5 percent of new businesses. Under the Startup Act, immigrant entrepreneurs that are able to secure financing, generate revenue, and create jobs, would be able to appeal and extend their visa for two years and eventually be eligible for legal permanent residency. This bill will ensure that tomorrow's entrepreneurs are able to create jobs and spur economic growth right here in Arizona.
