Issue Position: Safety and Health

Statement

Whether you only recently settled in Montana or have ancestors who have occupied this land for centuries, we are all Montanans, and need to care for this place for future generations. Caring for the places we live involves service to others and seeing ourselves as stewards of all that has been given us. For me, this has meant serving my neighbors as an emergency medical technician, rural fireman, and wildland firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.

First elected to the Missoula City Council in 2005, I chaired the council's Public Safety and Health Committee, which has oversight over Police, Fire, and Health departments. Among other things, I focused my efforts on cracking down on the scourge of DUI and distracted driving that has cut short way too many lives in this state.

As your representative, I'll take my experience in emergency services to Helena. I understand the challenges of our first responders. I also know that the bottom line is the safety and health of our communities and families.
