Kuster Applauds Release of Meriam Ibrahim from Sudan

Statement

Date: July 24, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) today released the following statement after learning that Meriam Ibrahim, her husband, and her two children, safely arrived in Rome from Sudan. Ms. Ibrahim was jailed and sentenced to death by a Sudanese court for refusing to renounce her Christian faith, and was subsequently barred from leaving Sudan after her initial release from prison in June. Congresswoman Kuster cosponsored a resolution in Congress strongly condemning Ms. Ibrahim's unjust imprisonment and sentencing, and she joined her fellow delegation members in pushing for her release:

"I am extremely relieved that Meriam Ibrahim and her family have finally been permitted to leave Sudan after her long and heart-wrenching ordeal," said Congresswoman Kuster. "Ms. Ibrahim's courage in the face of this horrific violation of human rights is extraordinary, and I'm so glad she has arrived safely in Rome. I appreciate the efforts of the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Embassy in Sudan, and all other parties involved in her release, and I will continue to monitor her situation and help ensure she can return home safely. Ms. Ibrahim's story reminds us that we must come together and work to end the heinous persecution of the many people like her who continue to face injustice around the world."
