Sen. Durbin's Subcommittee Approves Growlers

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin told NewsChannel 5 Wednesday that the men and women at Boeing who build the E-18 Growlers are the best, and the plane is the best as well.

The Growler is a sophisticated Navy aircraft designed to jam enemy electronics and the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that Durbin chairs approved 12 additional planes in the 2015 Pentagon budget.

The Navy wanted 22 but couldn't fit it in their budget.

"The 12 we came up with will sustain the production. And so we won't have any major changes in the men and women who are working there and we can sustain it into the next fiscal year. I wish we could have come up with more but in light of some of the budget challenges we face I think there's a general feeling that this is a positive outcome," said Durbin.

St. Louis-based Boeing Defense, Space & Security employs 15,000 full-time local employees.
