Issue Position: Let's Support the Working Family and Women

Issue Position

In 2011, Governor Mark Dayton tried to force a union onto daycare workers and home care attendants. The courts disagreed, so in 2013 the DFL controlled State Legislature passed a law to force unionization onto these private or self employed people. These workers and entrepreneurs, mostly women, would be called public employees only for the purpose of encouraging the state employee unions to unionize these workers.

If the state employee unions organizes the private daycare workers and home care attendants, they will have to pay union dues or at least pay fair share. Every working family should be concerned about this effort because if it is successful, the cost of daycare will increase and so will the cost of home care attendants in order to pay for those union dues. This is taking money out of the pockets of working families.

Voluntarily joining a union is a right. Being forced to join a union is wrong. Last Monday the U.S Supreme Court decided a similar case from Illinois and found that the Illinois law violated the First Amendment's freedom of association. There is similar lawsuit in Minnesota to find that the law passed in 2013 is also unconstitutional. The Minnesota lawsuit is on appeal and was awaiting this decision. We should now expect a quick decision on the constitutionality of the Minnesota law.

My opponent voted for the law that will raise the cost of daycare and home care attendants. I would not vote to force a union on private and self employed workers. I would not vote to raise the cost of day care. I want every working family to be able to save money for their children's post high school education or for other purposes.

Vote for Andres Hortillosa in the August 12 primary election and in the November 4 general election. Let's support the working family!
