The Record - Eggman Lays Out Challenge to Denham

Michael Eggman, the Modesto-area beekeeper and Democratic challenger for California's 10th Congressional District, has challenged Republican incumbent Rep. Jeff Denham of Turlock to five debates during the next five months.

Eggman personally delivered his proposal to Denham's campaign headquarters in Modesto last week.

Noting the two candidates have vastly different approaches to dealing with the serious issues facing the San Joaquin Valley, Eggman released the following statement:

"Our new vision of increased economic growth and expanded opportunity for the Valley stands in stark contrast with Congressman Denham's shutdown politics. The voters deserve to hear an open debate about our contrasting visions for the future, and I hope that Denham will respect the citizens by choosing to participate in these public forums."

In his offer, Eggman wrote, "I am sure you would agree that this election should not be decided by who has the biggest bank account or who has been able to collect the most special interest campaign contributions. Rather, voters should have the opportunity to hear directly from both congressional candidates to make an educated decision regarding which of us has the best vision to improve the Valley."

Eggman proposed one debate per month from July through October, including at least one in both San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties. He said he was willing to work around Denham's congressional commitments, holding the debates during breaks or on weekends.

Denham campaign spokesman Dave Gilliard provided the following response Wednesday to an inquiry regarding Eggman's proposal:

"We will be considering debate invitations for the fall campaign from legitimate organizations once the congressional calendar is set and we have a better idea of when Congress will adjourn."

Eric Goldman, Eggman's campaign spokesman, issued his own response Wednesday:

"Both August and October congressional recesses are already set and weekends will continue to happen every Saturday and Sunday, as they always have. Unless Jeff Denham is planning to vote to shut down the government again, the congressional calendar won't change and he should stand before the voters to defend his failed record in an open forum."

Goldman called for Denham to make his travel plans through November public "so that our campaign and community organizations can work around his schedule to set up debates."

To date, no debates have been scheduled between the two candidates, Goldman confirmed.

The 10th Congressional District includes all of Stanislaus County and parts of Tracy, Manteca, Ripon and Escalon in south San Joaquin County.
