PETERSON SAYS SNOWMOBILES ARE NOT THE PROBLEM IN NATIONAL PARKS
April 12, 2005

(WASHINGTON, DC) -- Congressman Collin C. Peterson (DFL-7th District) today testified before the House Resources Subcommittee on National Parks to urge continued access for snowmobiles in our National Parks.

"The snowmobile industry is important not only to my district; it is an important part of our national economy as well. All told, the industry and the businesses who depend on snowmobile activity generate over $7 billion in economic activity in the United States each year."

Peterson emphasized that the newer snowmobile engines are quieter and cleaner than the old machines.

"These improvements have significantly minimized the environmental impact of snowmobiling and have made it possible for citizens to enjoy their winter experience in our National Parks."

Peterson commended the Administration for endorsing a management policy that combines the best available technology requirements with usage limits and strict enforcement of park regulations.

"It is ridiculous to say that these new snowmobiles are causing more damage than all the cars and RV's that pass through the parks on any given day."

The 7th Congressional District is home to the only domestic manufacturers of snowmobiles in the United States and they employ around 3,500 people in the 7th Congressional District.
