McMorris Releases Report on the Value of Washington's Military Installations
February 24, 2005

Congresswoman Cathy McMorris (WA-05), along with the Washington State Congressional Delegation, released a report today on the military value of Washington State military installations. The report, which includes facts on Fairchild Air Force Base, emphasizes that our bases are at the forefront of our nation's defense and are uniquely suited to become a model for our military in years to come. McMorris currently serves on the Armed Service Committee and on the Readiness Subcommittee that has jurisdiction over Basement Realignment and Closure (BRAC).

"One of my top priorities is ensuring our national security and supporting the effort to protect our country against future terrorist attacks," said McMorris. "One important aspect of this is to strengthen and expand our state's bases. In today's security environment it is clear that the services must work as a joint force to combat terrorism."

Fairchild plays a vital role in fighting terrorism by providing air-refueling to the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps during joint operations. Fairchild houses the only active duty air-refueling wing on the West Coast; and since the attacks in September 2001, Fairchild's tanker mission has expanded to meet an important aspect on the Global War on Terror. Over 107 million gallons of fuel have been loaded off and more than 53 million gallons of fuel have been consumed.

"Fairchild Air Force Base is already home to 20 units representing the Air Force, the Air National Guard, US Joint Forces Command and plans are in the process for the Army Reserve Units to relocate to the base," said McMorris. "With ample amount of land and air space available, and the ability to provide joint operations, we believe that Fairchild AFB is strategically positioned to work cooperatively with other military services."

The Congresswoman hopes this report will highlight the military value of our bases, the joint operations and training capability that our bases provide, and the highest quality of life that Washington State provides for the men and women of the armed forces.
