Reps. Pallone and LoBiondo Statement on U.S. Supreme Court's Decision Not to Hear New Jersey's Sports Wagering Appeal

Statement

Representatives Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) and Frank LoBiondo (NJ-02) released the following statement upon news that the U.S. Supreme Court will not hear a challenge by the State of New Jersey to the September 2013 ruling of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals barring New Jersey from allowing sports wagering:

"We are disappointed with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision not to hear the State of New Jersey's appeal of the Third Circuit's decision upholding the federal ban on sports wagering. The Supreme Court should have heard this case given the importance of the practical and constitutional issues at hand. We believe that our state should be allowed to move forward with sports wagering as the people of New Jersey clearly support it. As New Jersey's options for appeal in this lawsuit have been now been exhausted, we implore our colleagues in Congress to support federal legislation that will allow the State of New Jersey to implement its law and authorize legalized sports wagering. We firmly remain committed to pushing for passage of legislation which we have introduced and which would bring legal sports wagering to New Jersey."

In September 2013, a three judge panel of the Third Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals split 2-1 in its decision to uphold a District Court ruling against New Jersey.
