We must prepare young Alaskans for the future by ensuring they have access to quality, affordable public education.

The legislature is falling short on their responsibility to fund education and is leaving local governments to pick up the tab. As a result, school districts across the state are cutting education staff. In Anchorage alone, by next year we'll have lost 400 positions in four years.

My opportunities in life came about because of an affordable public education. I honor the teachers and administrators who commit their life's work to the education of our children. Many improvements are needed in the Anchorage School District and in the University of Alaska, but each is an investment we must make to give all Alaskan children a chance for the future, regardless of their their social or economic background. Public money must be spent on public schools. Abandoning the system is no answer for Alaska's future. The future for young Alaskans will not be the same as our past, and they need our help in preparing for that future.
