Issue Position: Educating Our Children

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

Education is very important to me because it offers a way for people to think critically, become an informed member of the community, and break out of cycles of poverty. I support educational initiatives which push educational achievement to new heights, rather than limiting kids potential.

My approach to education can be best described as an "all of the above' approach, because I believe that complex issues cannot be solved with a "one size fits all' solution. Some of the solutions I support include:

I believe in school of choice initiatives because no child should be forced to attend a failing school. By having effective teachers, administrators, and meaningful evaluation methods, we can continue to push all children towards academic success. Career technical education (vocational education in the past) is something I fully support for our high schoolers in carpentry, nursing, tool and die, dental assisting, and all sorts of other careers.

I strongly support local community colleges offering programs in the skilled trades, such as auto/diesel mechanics, construction, welding, and industrial maintenance. The skilled trades offer high demand jobs for people who enjoy working with their hands and offer an excellent alternative to a traditional four-year degree.

I strongly support education focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S.T.E.M. fields.) I fully support the strategic investments Michigan has made in S.T.E.M. education because these fields are key to Michigan's future economic competitiveness.
