Noem Questions USDA on Navigable Waters Rule

Press Release

Date: June 20, 2014
Issues: Environment

U.S. Representative Kristi Noem questioned a senior U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) official on the Natural Resources Conservation Service's (NRCS) role with the proposed navigable waters rule. The Congresswoman raised concerns about the lack of clarity the interpretive rule would provide to producers and questioned why the administration is pursuing the rule when so many are opposed to it.

Noem questioned Robert Bonnie, USDA Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment at a hearing held by the Agriculture Committee's Subcommittee on Conservation, Energy and Forestry of which Noem is a member. While the navigable waters rule was issued by the Environmental Protection Agency, NRCS will be consulted about whether producers are following the correct conservation standards.
