Issue Position: The Economy, Jobs, and Unemployment

Issue Position

The best debt and deficit reduction program is getting people back to work.

The Nation's highways, bridges, schools, water systems and electricity grid are all desperately in need of upgrade and repair. I will work to see that these projects are undertaken now, thus creating good paying jobs, greatly improving the business environment, and reducing the burden on future generations of the cost of decades of neglect. I will work for greater investment in research and development in energy, transportation, medicine and agriculture, to name just a few areas, to ensure that the Nation remains the world leader in innovation and industry.

I support extending unemployment benefits for the millions of Americans, including over 200,000 veterans, who have lost their jobs since the start of the Great Recession and who face poverty and hunger if the House continues to refuse to extend these benefits. I also support raising the minimum wage to a living wage to ensure that full-time work is sufficient to keep a family out of poverty.

I also support raising the minimum wage to a living wage to ensure that full-time work is sufficient to keep a family out of poverty. We must increase investment in education to ensure that the workers of tomorrow are adequately and appropriately trained for the 21st Century. Finally, I support immigration reform, including a path to citizenship.

I will work to foster public-private partnerships to create jobs in areas of high unemployment. Rather than continuing to subsidize enormously profitable industries, we should shift those resources to increase small business access to credit and grants and support the development of new technologies and businesses. Companies that offshore jobs or profits should be penalized, not rewarded with tax advantages.
