Lieberman Statement on the Death of Pope John Paul II

WASHINGTON -Senator Joe Lieberman (D-CT) today made the following statement in reaction to the death of Pope John Paul II:

"I join all Americans in mourning the death today of Pope John Paul II and in expressing my condolences to Roman Catholics in Connecticut and around the world. This Pope was a courageous champion of religious freedom and human rights. His role in breaking Eastern Europe from the oppressive grip of Communism can not be underestimated. During his numerous travels, the Pontiff personally touched the lives of millions of Catholics and non-Catholics alike. He built bridges to non-Catholics that had never existed before and transformed forever the Church's perception of Jews from a separated people to brothers and sisters in faith. In an age of science and materialism and genocide, he was the world's most consistent advocate of spiritual and humanitarian values. Pope John Paul II leaves behind a lasting legacy of peace, faith and leadership and will be truly missed by millions throughout the world."
