Hatch Statement on the Resignation of Eric Shinseki

Statement

U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) today issued the following statement after Eric Shinseki, Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), resigned following reports of widespread misconduct and malfeasance that led to the deaths of veterans waiting for medical care:

"General Shinseki served our nation for many years, and I thank him for his many years of heroic service to our country. I personally greatly admire him.

What happened ‎at some VA facilities across the country is reprehensible and unacceptable. Our nation's veterans are heroes, and they deserve to be treated as such. I visited the Salt Lake VA hospital just yesterday and met with some of the incredible men and women who served our country, and also with the selfless individuals treating those who sacrificed so much for our country. They both deserve the best - our veterans deserve the best care and the VA caregivers deserve strong leadership. That leadership is in place at the Salt Lake VA hospital and affiliated facilities, and the decision made today is the best to ensure the VA has strong leadership in Washington as well. I hope President Obama will work with Congress to ensure our veterans receive the treatment and care they deserve."
