Congressman Xavier Becerra on May Jobs Report

Statement

Date: June 6, 2014
Location: Los Angeles, CA

Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after the Department of Labor released the jobs report for May:

"After experiencing during the first decade of the 21st century the severest decline in American prosperity since the Great Depression, today we can say with confidence that our economy continues to grow and create jobs. Over the last 51 consecutive months, our economy has created 9.4 million private sector jobs and the unemployment rate has dropped to its lowest level in five years. This is a remarkable achievement in the face of Congressional obstruction impeding President Obama's pro-growth jobs agenda.

"The recovery for middle class families would be much farther along if House Republicans would tear down their "brick walls' of opposition to raising the minimum wage, guaranteeing equal pay for equal work, renewing emergency long-term unemployment insurance, and finally fixing the broken immigration system.

"Congress must move beyond the politics of obstruction and manufactured government shutdowns. Let's get to work on building an economy that works for all Americans, not just the wealthiest few."
