Barrow Statement on Passage of VA Accountability Bill

Statement

Date: May 22, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) released the following statement regarding House passage of the Department of Veterans Affairs Management Accountability Act, bipartisan legislation that Congressman Barrow cosponsored, that makes it easier for the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to remove employees who exhibit poor performance.

"Accountability at the VA is lacking these days,' said Congressman Barrow. "Senior level employees at the VA have entirely too many civil service protections that make it difficult to hold them accountable when they fail to provide the service we've promised to our nation's veterans. Folks that I represent want to see employees at the VA held responsible for failing to do their job. This bipartisan legislation makes it much easier for the secretary to demand accountability, and is a good first step to restoring some trust in the VA."

The legislation passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 390-33.
