Black Statement on Healthcare.gov "Heartbleed" Vulnerability

Statement

Date: April 19, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Diane Black (R-TN-06), issued the following statement on the news that the federal Obamacare exchange, Healthcare.gov, is potentially vulnerable to cyber threats due to the "Heartbleed" internet security flaw:

"The vast amount of personal information that users input into the federal exchange is why my House Republican colleagues and I have been so concerned with the website security from the beginning," said Congressman Black. "Even though IT experts asked HHS to include provisions in their final rules that would require the federal government to notify someone if their personal information has been breached, they declined to do so. This astonishing failure leaves millions of Americans vulnerable to cyber threats and identity theft, and the news today that users are being asked to change their passwords speaks volumes to the websites continued vulnerability. The House acted in January to address this issue by passing the Health Exchange and Data Security Act to address this important issue, and now it is more important than ever that the Senate takes up and passes this important consumer protection legislation immediately."
