Contempt Vote an Important Step to Bringing Accountability to the IRS

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Keith Rothfus [PA-12] released the following statement after voting to hold former Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress and call on Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate wrongdoing at the IRS:

"As public servants, IRS officials and employees must respect their responsibility to the taxpayer," said Rothfus. "We expect our government to be a guardian of our rights, and those responsible for violations of the public's trust must be held accountable. Unfortunately, Lois Lerner has refused to cooperate with the congressional investigation. Today's votes to hold Lois Lerner in contempt and call on Attorney General Holder to appoint a special counsel to investigate wrongdoing are important steps to bringing accountability to the IRS."

Last year, the IRS admitted that it targeted organizations based on group names and political ideologies. These organizations were often forced to divulge their donor lists and answer invasive questions about their affiliations.

Lois Lerner served as the director of the IRS's Exempt Organizations Division.
