Enyart Votes No On Destructive Ryan Budget

Citing major potential cuts against education, cuts to Medicare, and a middle class tax increase, U.S. Congressman Bill Enyart (IL-12) voted against the budget proposed by Congressman Paul Ryan today.

"I've been fighting for quite some time now to keep Medicare and Medicare Advantage strong, vital programs for our seniors. I simply will not stand to see our seniors bear the brunt of this preposterous budget," said Enyart.

"As I voted, I saw the Republicans in Congress pass a budget proposal that would give millionaires a$200,000 tax break, which would simultaneously give middle class families a $2,000 tax increase," said Enyart. "Sixty-nine percent of the cuts in Ryan's budget come from programs designed for low income folks in our country. It's ludicrous to think that we should balance the budget on the backs of our seniors, on the backs of the middle class, or on the backs of our students."

Congressman Ryan's budget also includes a $125 billion cut, over 10 years, to the Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program, of which sixty-two percent of enrollees are women; a $145 billion cut to college Pell Grants designed to give low income students better access to higher education; and would eliminate tax breaks to small businesses enabling owners to provide health insurance to employees.

Enyart noted, "I've been spending my time in Congress looking for common sense ways to further decrease the deficit and balance the budget. I cannot in good faith do that by cutting programs for those who need it most."
