Pelosi Statement on Oral Arguments in Supreme Court Cases on Women's Health

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the oral arguments before the Supreme Court in cases reviewing the requirement in the Affordable Care Act that for-profit corporations include birth control coverage in employees' insurance plans:

"The Affordable Care Act places health care decisions where they belong -- in the hands of families, individuals, and patients. This landmark law puts a premium on preventive care to help Americans stay healthy, save money, and secure care when they need it most. For women, that means comprehensive coverage for a full range of women's health services, no questions asked.

"As the Supreme Court hears oral arguments today, the message to the justices is clear: health care decisions should be made by a woman, her family, and her doctor, not by her boss, not by insurers, and not by Washington politicians. The responsibility to protect and strengthen women's health must rest with women alone, and never be dictated by a third party.

"Allowing employers and CEOs to choose the medical procedures of any of their employees would set a dangerous precedent for our country and for the health of all Americans. When they release their ruling later this year, it is our hope that the justices of the highest court in the land will reaffirm and preserve the fundamental rights of America's women."
