Rep. Sanchez Statement on Senate Bill to Eliminate 'Good Soldier' Defense

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Loretta Sanchez (CA-46), senior member of the House Armed Services Committee and co-founder of the Women in the Military Caucus, today released a statement commending the Senate's passage of the McCaskill-Ayotte-Fischer bill that strengthens historic reforms to stop sexual assaults in the military.

"I am pleased that the Senate overwhelmingly voted to pass legislation that will further help stop sexual assaults in the military. In addition to the historic reforms passed in the recent defense bill, including my Track it to Prevent it Act that tracks harassment to prevent assault, the bill passed by the Senate last night removes an unacceptable excuse for criminal behavior -- the "good soldier' defense.

"In no other world does being good at your profession make you any less guilty of sexual assault, and I am glad that this legislation changes that outdated defense. I look forward to passing this bill in the House."
